It even beats Google, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.survata.com\/blog\/amazon-takes-49-percent-of-consumers-first-product-search-but-search-engines-rebound\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data from Survata<\/a>. So whether Amazon is your only selling channel or one of several, making sure your products are searchable is key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon SEO is a lot different from Google SEO. Though both are rooted in keyword research and on-page optimization, SEO is far more complex than that. And Amazon SEO has several commonalities with \u201cregular\u201d SEO, but there are also nuances unique to the ecommerce marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll look at what Amazon SEO is and how you can do the keyword research and publish listings that will put you at the top of the search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Amazon SEO?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon SEO is when a seller optimizes product listings to be easily found through Amazon\u2019s on-site search tools. SEO is \u201csearch engine optimization\u201d \u2014 when referred to as SEO, we\u2019re talking about Google mainly, but Amazon SEO is specific to searches performed on the Amazon website. Optimizing your site for Amazon SEO involves keyword research and on-page optimization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI actually think Amazon SEO is one of the most overlooked tactics,\u201d says Joe Sloan, marketing coordinator at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurassicsand.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jurassic Sands<\/a>. Jurassic Sands has doubled sales for the past three years, a large part, Sloan says, attributable to their Amazon SEO strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amazon\u2019s A9 algorithm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on how familiar you are with Amazon SEO, you may have heard of the A9 algorithm. Here, you can get extremely specific and incorporate any long-tail keywords you\u2019ve identified. \u201cBe descriptive,\u201d Sloan says. \u201cAmazon has tons of fields to help answer customer questions so there\u2019s no hang-up in making that purchasing decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zaiger echoes this advice, pointing out that Amazon doesn\u2019t knock sellers for having lengthy descriptions. \u201cBy creating extra content, you\u2019ll be able to include more keywords,\u201d he says. \u201cMost buyers won\u2019t actually read that far into your product description (which is why Amazon includes the specific product features at the top).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Include more variations on how people talk about the product that you\u2019re selling. The more you fill out, the more opportunities you have to be indexed and found in searches.\u201d<a name=\"Amazon\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amazon reviews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reviews are one of Amazon\u2019s top ranking factors, says Jeff Martin, director of SEO at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthlabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HealthLabs.com<\/a>. But if you\u2019re just starting out, you don\u2019t have the luxury of tons of reviews. \u201cDepending on your product and niche, one way [to get reviews] is to give a very large discount on your first dozen or so products in exchange for a review,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you\u2019ve gotten some traction, discounts aren\u2019t going to be a sustainable way to grow your business. \u201cSubscribe to a review service that sends follow-up emails which allow the customer to easily write a review of your product post-purchase,\u201d Martin suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris Hornak, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/bloghands.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blog Hands<\/a>, a blog-writing service for small businesses and digital marketing agencies, agrees with this advice. \u201cOnce you have sales, you need to proactively ask for customer reviews because those will also help improve your position.\u201d Hornak recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jumpsend.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JumpSend<\/a> as a tool to execute this approach.<a name=\"Categories\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Categories<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to correctly list and categorize your products. Though many sellers intentionally miscategorize to avoid higher dues to Amazon, this can actually hurt your search ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen business that place their products in home and garden over children\u2019s toys because Amazon takes a smaller percentage, but this can greatly affect being found and being placed alongside competitors,\u201d says Sloan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The listing below from Jurassic Sands is categorized under Toys &amp; Games &gt; Sports &amp; Outdoor Play &gt; Sandboxes &amp; Accessories \u2014 instead of a home and garden-related category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<img data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.pathedits.com\/Images\/posts\/amazon-seo-how-to-get-found-and-sell-more\/jurassic-sands-beach-play-sand-amazon.jpg\" class=\"Sirv\" alt=\"Amazon listing for Jurassic Sands Golden Cambrian beach play sand, ideal for sandcastles and sandboxes\">\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conversion rate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember how we noted that improving your product photos would help conversion rates, which would signal to Amazon that your products are worth high rankings? Imagery isn\u2019t the only element on the page to consider: You\u2019ll also want to make sure your <a href=\"https:\/\/pathedits.com\/blogs\/tips\/tagged\/amazon\">Amazon listing product descriptions are written to convert<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInformative bullets can accurately present all product information and help turn a shopper into a buyer,\u201d says Pam Galeone, director of brand marketing at <a href=\"https:\/\/goamify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amify<\/a>. \u201cEnhanced Brand Content can differentiate your brand, depict your product feature\/benefits and build brand equity. This all leads to an increase in conversion rate.\u201d<a name=\"Promotion\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Promotion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Still hurting for sales? Tried some paid promotional tactics to drive traffic to your product listings. This will then give those conversion signals to Amazon that help with SEO. <a href=\"https:\/\/advertising.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon Advertising<\/a> is one great way to get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the best ways to generate organic keywords for SEO on Amazon is to set up a Sponsored Products advertising campaign with automatic targeting,\u201d says Bullock. \u201cRun this type of campaign for at least a few weeks and then download the Search Term report; this will show you in exactly which searches and keywords your sponsored products appeared as well as which terms converted best. Once you have that data, you can choose to add the most relevant keywords to your titles and\/or bulleted details in order to start showing up organically for those same searches.\u201d<a name=\"beyond\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond Amazon: More SEO tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Optimizing for Amazon SEO is one thing, but that doesn\u2019t mean you should throw Google to the wayside completely. In fact, focusing on Google\u2019s organic search is one of the best and most-overlooked tactics in Craig De Borba\u2019s opinion. \u201cAlthough Amazon hasn\u2019t disclosed what increases their Amazon Best Sellers\u2019 Rank (BSR), as Amazon sellers we can extrapolate that increased traffic, sales and reviews does influence BSR,\u201d says the Amazon SEO specialist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onpointinternetmarketing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Onpoint Internet Marketing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to do this is to generate backlinks from high-ranking websites and blogs. \u201cAs a seller we can drive traffic with Amazon PPC, but a better long-term traffic strategy is to rank the product in Google search,\u201d De Borba says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitroff uses this approach on his own website and social media channels, which you can do as well. \u201cI write blog posts using SEO for my website that helps my company rank higher on Google,\u201d he says. \u201cAt the bottom of these blog posts, I\u2019ll write a small paragraph advertising my book along with a link to the Amazon page as well as a picture of the cover. Being consistent across all different media platforms helps with SEO and attracting more people to your content.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRemember, optimization is an ongoing process and needs your regular contribution,\u201d says Ayyar.
